Telling us you don't need a TV Licence

The law has changed. Your TV Licence now covers you to download or watch any BBC programmes on iPlayer, as well as watch or record live TV on any channel. Find out more

No TV? Not watching live TV on any channel, or BBC programmes on iPlayer? Empty property? You can let us know here.

You don’t need a TV Licence if you:

  • never watch or record programmes on any channel as they’re being shown on TV or live on an online TV service, and
  • never download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer – live, catch up or on demand.

This could be on any device, including a TV, desktop computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet, games console, digital box or DVD/VHS recorder.

Please check the information below and then complete our No Licence Needed declaration.

What if I already have a licence?

You will need to cancel your licence before you complete your No Licence Needed declaration.

What if the property is empty?

Please let us know your address is unoccupied. This will stop letters being sent to the address for up to six months.

You may want to let us know the property is empty for one of the following reasons:

  • You’re a landlord waiting for new tenants to move in.
  • You’ve bought a property which is empty whilst renovations take place.
  • You’re working abroad for a fixed period.
  • The licence holder has died and the property will be sold.
  • The property is empty and waiting to be sold.
What happens if I tell you I don't need a TV Licence?

We will send you confirmation of your No Licence Needed declaration.

If you tell us you don’t need a licence, we may confirm this with a visit to your address. This is because when we visit and make contact, we find almost one in six people that tell us they don't need a TV Licence actually do need one. If you are not licensed, you risk prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000* plus any legal costs and/or compensation you may be ordered to pay.

*The maximum fine is £2,000 in Guernsey and £500 in Jersey.

What if I'm moving home and still don't need a licence?

If you made a No Licence Needed declaration at your old address and you’re moving home, it only takes a few minutes to let us know.

Please use our Contact us form (in step 2 of the form click the 'Contact us' button at the bottom).

Check you still don’t need a licence, and then let us know by telling us:

  • Your title, initial and last name
  • Your current address and postcode
  • and your old address and postcode.

Once you let us know you’ve moved, you won’t need to complete the declaration form.
