Telling us you don't need a TV Licence

No TV? Not watching live TV on any device? Empty property? You can let us know here.

If you watch or record programmes as they're being shown on TV or live on an online TV service, you need to be covered by a TV Licence. This is the case whether you use a TV, computer, tablet, mobile phone, games console, digital box, DVD/VHS recorder or any other device.

If you don't watch TV at all, or you only ever watch on demand or catch-up TV, you can tell us you don't need a TV Licence. Please check the frequently asked questions below and then complete our No Licence Needed declaration.

What if I already have a licence?

You will need to cancel your licence before you complete your No Licence Needed declaration.

What if the property is empty?

Please let us know your address is unoccupied. This will stop letters being sent to the address for up to six months.

You may want to let us know the property is empty for one of the following reasons:

  • You’re a landlord waiting for new tenants to move in.
  • You’ve bought a property which is empty whilst renovations take place.
  • You’re working abroad for a fixed period.
  • The licence holder has died and the property will be sold.
  • The property is empty and waiting to be sold.
What happens if I tell you I don't need a TV Licence?

We will send you confirmation of your No Licence Needed declaration.

Please note that it's TV Licensing's policy to visit some addresses to check that the occupants don't need a TV Licence. This is because when we visit and make contact, we find almost one in five people that tell us they don't need a TV Licence actually do need one. If we find that you're watching TV illegally you could risk prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000.*

* The Maximum fine in Jersey is £500 and the maximum fine in Guernsey is £2,000.

What if I'm moving home and still don't need a licence?

If you made a No Licence Needed declaration at your old address and you’re moving home, it only takes a few minutes to let us know.

Please use our Contact us form (in step 2 of the form click the 'Contact us' button at the bottom).

Let us know you still don’t need a licence - you don’t watch live TV on any device or have no TV - by telling us your:

  • title, initial and last name,
  • current address and postcode,
  • old address and postcode.

Once you’ve let us know you moved, you won’t need to complete the declaration form.
