Our records show BBC iPlayer has been used

using_iplayer

You need a TV Licence to be covered for everything on BBC iPlayer. It also covers you for all TV channels and live TV on streaming services. On any device.

Why did we send you a letter?

An email linked to your address has used BBC iPlayer several times over recent weeks. That email may not be yours – it could be a family member or someone who has lived at your property. Either way, while we’re pleased your household has been enjoying iPlayer, you need a TV Licence to keep using it.

Don’t forget, your licence also covers you for all other TV channels. And live TV on streaming platforms. On any device.

Now, please choose from one of the options below.

Confirm you don't need a TV licence

It’s against the law to watch or record any live TV without a licence. This includes everything on BBC iPlayer.

If no one in the household uses iPlayer or live TV, please confirm your No Licence Needed status.

How is my data used?

For more information about how TV Licensing collects, processes, stores and uses data, you can view the TV Licensing Privacy Policy.

The BBC iPlayer Privacy Notice explains that the BBC keep information as long as the account remains active and that they will share information with TV Licensing, to keep their database up to date.

When a BBC account holder accesses BBC iPlayer, the BBC retains a log that includes the date, time, the email address used, and the genre viewed and duration. An account holder can inspect the log for their own account. For more detail, visit the How do I see information about me? page.

Why have I received this letter?

An email address associated with your postal address has an existing BBC iPlayer account.

The data for the letter that you received used this email address and the associated data from the BBC iPlayer account.

The iPlayer data was selected prior to the date on the letter you received, and multiple iPlayer views (genre viewed and duration) were seen in the preceding eight weeks. This was the data used to inform the letter that you received from us.

Who provided the email address?

Reputable third-party organisations we work with (such as third-party data providers) give us data that you have provided to them.

They work in accordance with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 and abide by best practice guidelines such as those of the Direct Marketing Association (DMA).

We will never use this third-party data for the purposes of marketing.
