What is 3D Secure?

3D Secure simply means your transaction is ‘Verified by Visa’. A similar system developed by Mastercard is MasterCard SecureCode.

What are the benefits of 3D Secure?

3D Secure adds an extra layer of security decreasing the risk of people being able to use your card fraudulently on the internet. It’s easy to use and you can be confident that your online payment is secure.

How does it protect me?

The system allows card issuers (e.g.your bank) to check by use of a code or password, that the purchaser is the authentic cardholder, at the point of buying from an online seller (merchant). The merchant does not capture this code or password so it reduces the risk of security incidents at online merchants. There is also no way for hackers to get the password.

How does it work during purchase?

The checking (authentication) can be done in various ways. Your card issuer can ask you to:
  • enter a password on screen, known only to you and your bank,
  • say, during an automated call to your mobile, a code generated by your card issuer on your screen
  • input on screen or say over the phone a code texted to your mobile by your card issuer

What if 3D Secure asks me questions I don’t want to answer?

The 3D Secure page comes from your card issuer (e.g. your bank). It is not a TV Licensing website page.

Your card issuer may need additional security information from you. This can happen if you have not registered for the 3D Secure (Verified by Visa) service with your bank.

You could be asked to:

  • provide your credit/debit card number
  • provide your date of birth,
  • activate ‘Verified by Visa’

If you have any doubts about questions you are being asked please:

  • check with the bank who issued your credit/debit card
  • View your bank’s online FAQs on ‘Verified by Visa’
