The Wireless Telegraphy Act 1967 (as amended) states that you are required by law to tell us when you sell or rent any television set as well as many other items of TV receiving equipment.
This includes the sale or rental of any of the following items (whether new or second hand):
TV set
DVD or video recorder
Digital box
PC (including laptop) with TV card
TV card
You must notify us within 28 days of each transaction, providing full details of the buyer or hirer and address of where the equipment will be installed.
(Although mobile phones may be used to watch and record television programmes, you are not required to tell us when you sell these.)
To request your electronic or paper notification forms and to ask any further questions, please email us at dealer.support@capita.co.uk or call 0844 800 5819.
The notification form you need to complete will ask for:
The buyer's or hirer's details (title, initials and surname as well as the address and postcode of where the equipment will be installed).
The date of transaction.
Whether the equipment is colour or black and white.
Your dealer name and address.
Your dealer registration and outlet number.
What type of equipment it is (TV set, DVD or video recorder, digital box, PC or laptop with TV card etc). Although this last piece of information is optional, it is really valuable to us and your help is appreciated.
We log all notification details onto our database, which we match against our records of current TV Licence holders.
If they don't match up, we will investigate any potential licence evaders who may be breaking the law by using TV receiving equipment without a valid licence.
It is an offence not to notify us of every transaction. Failure to do so could result in a fine of up to £1,000 per offence for you or the store manager employed by your company.
Recently, a major retailer was fined £9,100 and ordered to pay £1,050 costs for failing to notify TV Licensing of television equipment sales and rentals.
