You can claim a refund for one of the following reasons:
TV equipment no longer used
Refunds are available for complete unused quarters that remain on your TV Licence at the point it was no longer needed. For example, you move abroad.
Covered by another TV Licence
Refunds are available for complete unused quarters that remain on your TV Licence at the point it was no longer needed. For example, you move in with a partner and they already have a TV Licence.
TV Licence purchased in error
Refunds are available if you purchase a TV Licence in error. For example, you and your partner both buy a TV Licence for the same property and only one TV Licence is needed.
Death of a licence holder
Refunds are available for complete unused quarters that remain on a TV Licence at the point it was no longer needed. Only the executor of the deceased licence holder's estate can apply for a refund in these circumstances.
A replacement TV Licence has been obtained
Refunds are available if you no longer require a licence because it has been replaced by a different TV Licence. For example, you upgrade to a colour TV Licence from a black and white TV Licence or you now have a TV Licence with a blind concession or a free over 75 TV Licence.
If you believe you are eligible, you can apply for a refund online.
If you are not eligible for a refund, it is important that you still let us know you no longer need your TV Licence so that we don't contact you again unnecessarily. To let us know about this, just enter your details in the online declaration form.
An application for a refund must be submitted within two years of the expiry date of the licence that is the subject of the refund claim. Refunds will be paid to you by either a cheque or by BACS transfer. The BACS transfer will be paid directly into the bank account you specify during the refund application process.
